The 2009 Atlantic Passages began at approximately noon, eastern daylight time, on Wednesday, May 6, when the Maine Maritime Academy's Training Ship State of Maine (TSSOM) departed Castine, ME on its annual training cruise. Engine difficulties, however, required TSSOM to return to Searsport, ME to await parts and undergo repairs. At 08:00 on Monday morning, 18 May, TSSOM again headed to sea carrying the mini-boats participating in the 2009 Atlantic Passages. Five new mini-boats are participating in the 2009 Atlantic Passages. Their names are: Bluefish, K-Kids Kruiser, Uber Sail, USS C.P.S., and Zenith. Each mini-boat carries a battery-operated, self-contained AXTracker T3 GPS telemetry device, purchased from iBOATtack.com. These devices are programmed to transmit via satellite each mini-boat's position at two-hour intervals to iBOATtack.com, where their locations can be viewed.
